MASSACHUSETTS PASSES LEGISLATION WHICH WILL REDEFINE NEEDLE DISPOSAL

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS – July 26, 2007 –Massachusetts passes legislation which will redefine needle disposal for diabetics and patients injecting at home.

Massachusetts passes legislation which will redefine needle disposal for diabetics and patients injecting at home.

Massachusetts Senate Bill 2569 requires the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Public Health to design and implement an expanded program for the collection and disposal of home generated sharps, including syringes, pen needles and lancets. The new legislation requires the establishment of sharps collection centers at medical facilities, pharmacies and municipal facilities. The new sharps collection centers will only accept sharps waste which are packaged “in leak-proof, rigid, puncture-resistant and shatterproof containers.” Thus the new Massachusetts law will require diabetics to dispose of their used syringes, pen needles and lancets in sharps containers.

Until the new law is fully implemented, diabetics in Massachusetts should follow the recommendations at the following web site: http://www.mass.gov/dep/recycle/hazards/medical.htm

Currently, UltiMed is the only sharps manufacturer that supplies an approved sharps container with syringe purchase. As a manufacturer of syringe products, we feel it is our obligation and responsibility to promote the safe disposal of these products.
